Compelling read. It is obvious to me that many of those that identify with gothness, including myself, do so because they see, and feel, the sadness that seeps through the veins of our tortured earth. The media tells us that the apocalypse is nigh and that humans are either predators (male) or prey (female): Feel guilty or be scared. To escape this madness, those that take up the goth style do two things (1) blur the dichotomy of predetors/prey and male/female, and (2) declare (stylistically at least) that they are either dead or they are their own worst enemy. This way they have (1) found solace in unity and guilt-free being, and (2) become impossible to harm. Therefore my theory is that goths are self-selected - gothness is a certain way to deal with life or a certain attitude towards life. It can be an good way to deal with a burden. It is unfortunate that gothness may not be able to relief the burden completely however, and thus horrid things can still happen, but I wonder how many it has saved.
